A significant milestone has been reached in the development of ISO 28560-2 RFID in Libraries – Part 2: Encoding based on ISO/IEC 15962. It has passed with 95% acceptance its second ballot (see story of 9 February – below). Some changes have been proposed that will be addressed over the next few weeks, but the fundamental flexibility of being able to select what data to encode remains firmly in place. The standard has just one final ballot for approval for publication.
So, by December when approval is almost certain to be achieved, technology vendors should be in a position to support libraries with ISO 28560-2 solutions. Convergent Software Limited announces that it has developed encoding and decoding software and is working with vendors to achieve ISO 28560-2 conformant solutions by the time that the standard is published. ISO 28560 Information and Documentation – RFID in Libraries – PART 2: Encoding based on ISO/IEC 15962 is currently in its second ballot within the standardisation community. When this ballot closes in May 2009, and additional technical issues are addressed, the standard will be on its last lap to publication.
The time is now right for libraries and technology vendors to gain an understanding of the encoding principles defined in the standard. Convergent Software Limited announces the availability of a free-for-use encoding demonstrator of the standard. More ...

With 42 million items of baggage delayed (some lost) at an estimated cost of $3.8 million in 2007, baggage handling is a serious problem for the airline industry. Convergent Software Limited has decided to upgrade the software that it released earlier in the year to support the IATA RP1740C RFID Airline Baggage Handling Standard.
The new software still supports all the modelling and diagnostic facilities that were previously available. By introducing support for encoding templates, it is better able to support locally defined rules. In addition, XML outputs enable increased integration options for RFID trials and smaller scale systems. More ...

To assist librarians and solution providers to gain a better understanding of the new flexible encoding rules, Convergent Software Limited is providing an online demonstrator to support ISO 28560-2.
The demonstrator will be on this website and is being made available free-of-charge to anyone interested in ISO 28560. More ...

Our modelling, encoding, decoding and diagnostic software is based on the sound foundations International Standards. These undergo rigorous review by experts from various national standards bodies. Today the following two standards - vital to our work - passed their latest review and were approved to move forward to be balloted as Final Committee Drafts. The standards are:
- ISO/IEC 15961-1 Information technology - Radio frequency identification (RFID) for item management: Data protocol - Part 1: Application interface
- ISO/IEC 15962 Information technology - Radio frequency identification (RFID) for item management: Data protocol - Data encoding rules and logical memory functions
